Vol. 127 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages of Shannon Navigation Employees.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether any proposal is being considered to increase the very low wages paid to Shannon Navigation employees at Limerick and in adjoining areas as these men are in receipt of wages which amount only to about two-thirds of the rates of wages paid to men employed on similar work in Limerick.

Following review of the rates of wages of the employees referred to by the Deputy, authority has been received by the Commissioners of Public Works for the grant of certain increases. The increased rates will be paid with effect as from the 1st April, 1951.

Mr. O'Higgins

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say whether these increased rates are of general application?

Yes, as far as this particular question is concerned.

Mr. O'Higgins

There are a number of similar employees right up the Shannon.

That is what I wish to ask also. May we take it that this applies to all the Shannon Navigation employees and not merely to those at Limerick?

Yes, that is so.
