Vol. 127 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Commission on Emigration Report.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if, in order to allay the anxiety aroused by the Taoiseach's recent statement at Salthill, Galway, concerning the conditions in which Irish boys and girls, at present residing in Britain, live, he will ensure the earliest presentation of the report and recommendations of the Commission on Emigration and, if necessary, have an interim report issued dealing with these conditions.

I am informed that the work of the Commission on Emigration and Other Population Problems is well advanced and that every effort is being made to bring it to completion. I do not propose to ask the commission to submit an interim report on any aspect of their terms of reference.

Will the Minister agree that, pending the issue of the commission's report, the Taoiseach should not have indulged in the alarmist and exaggerated statements made by him?

Pending the issue of the report would the Minister discontinue the practice of recruiting through his employment exchanges emigrants for farms in England?

Is there to be any alteration in the practice——

Discontinue that practice if these statements are true.

——established by your colleagues in the Coalition?

Let us have the truth for once.
