Vol. 127 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Refuelling of Ships.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is prepared to carry out the policy of the previous Government in having incoming and outgoing ships refuelled in the oil wharves at Haulbowline as the jetty is now capable of berthing any ship going to Cork City.

I have no function in regard to the provision of commercial bunkering facilities at Haulbowline, but I am prepared to consider favourable applications for a lease of the oil-storage facilities in connection with the establishment of a commercially operated bunkering business there. The new jetty which is under construction at Haulbowline is not due to be completed until about April next.

Would the Minister be able to initiate a conference with the Department of Industry and Commerce in relation to the building of the new jetty and the provision of the facilities in question?

The new jetty is actually under construction and the question of the lease will be dealt with by the Department of Defence in due course.
