Vol. 127 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ration Book Delays.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there is an undue delay in issuing ration books for newly born children in the Wexford area; and, if so, if he will make arrangements with the Department of Local Government to have the registrars of births notify births to his Department with a view to expediting the issue of ration books.

I am advised that for the most part delays which have occurred in the issue of ration books for newly born children in the Wexford area have been occasioned by the failure of parents to register births promptly, and were not due to any remissness on the part of the local registrars. I regard the existing arrangement for notification to my Department as being satisfactory, and I do not think the action suggested by the Deputy is necessary.

Is it the responsibility of the registrar to inform the Department?

Yes, when the birth is registered.

I do not think that is being done in a lot of cases.
