Vol. 127 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Temporary Civil Servants.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will arrange that any applicant holding the Black and Tan medal and the emergency medal and employed in a temporary capacity as a civil servant will be given the opportunity of acquiring permanent status as vacancies occur.

Temporary staff have in recent years been recruited to the Civil Service under a system of preferences for persons who served in the Defence Forces during the emergency or who rendered military service in the period 1916-23 and have been granted active or general service medals.

The question of establishing such persons must be considered in relation to the particular grades to which they belong. Opportunities are given from time to time, to the greatest extent practicable, to temporary officers to secure establishment by means of confined competitions.
