Vol. 127 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state whether he has received any proposals for the building of a new school at Bennett's Church, Ballymacarbery, County Waterford, to replace the existing school there; and, if so, if he will state the present position with regard to the proposal.

Mr. Lynch

A grant has been sanctioned by the Department towards the cost of the erection of a new school to replace the present Bennett's Church National School, Ballymacarbery, County Waterford.

The arrangements for the erection of the new building are in the hands of the Commissioners of Public Works. Tenders have been received by the commissioners and are at present under consideration.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware of the urgent necessity for providing new schools at Ballincollig and Kilmurry, Lissarda, County Cork, and that such proposals have been in his Department for a number of years past and, further, if he is prepared to state when such work will be commenced.

Mr. Lynch

I understand from the Commissioners of Public Works that they expect to be in a position to advertise at an early date for tenders for the erection of the proposed new Ballincollig boys' and girls' national schools.

Difficulties have arisen in regard to the site which it had been agreed to accept as suitable for the proposed new Kilmurry National School and the question whether a possible alternative site could be accepted is at present receiving urgent attention.

asked the Minister for Education if he will now state when work is likely to start on the new school at Killahan, Abbeydorney, County Kerry.

Mr. Lynch

Certain arrangements in connection with the evidence of title to the site offered by the manager for this new school have yet to be made before the Department will be in a position to sanction a grant towards the cost of erecting the school. I expect that these arrangements will be completed at an early date.

When a grant has been sanctioned it will be a matter for the Commissioners of Public Works to have working drawings and a specification prepared and to take such other steps as may be required to enable the new school to be erected. While I am unable to say at present when building operations will be commenced, there will be no avoidable delay in having the case brought to the stage at which a contract can be placed.
