Vol. 127 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Whiddy Island Schoolchildren.

asked the Minister for Education if he will increase the grant payable in respect of children from Whiddy Island attending school on the mainland.

Mr. Lynch

As far as I am aware there is at present only one child from Whiddy Island residing on the mainland for the purpose of attending a national school. The maximum grant allowed in such cases is being paid in respect of that child, and I regret to say that no increase can be made in the grant payable.

In view of the fact that in the very near future there will be an increase to five in the number of children coming from Whiddy Island mainland and as an encouragement towards the sending of these children to school, would the Minister consider increasing the grant when that happens?

Mr. Lynch

I will have the Deputy's suggestion conveyed to the Minister.
