Vol. 127 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Christmas Postal Facilities.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange that articles or parcels leaving this country for Great Britain, through the Post Office, during the month of December next and intended as personal Christmas gifts shall bear reduced postal and parcel rates.

I regret that on administrative as well as financial grounds it would not be practicable to meet the Deputy's wishes.

Will the Minister agree that the average donor likely to be affected does not come within the high income bracket and that many of the recipients, according to the Taoiseach, are now living in conditions of indescribable squalor in England so that the slightest concession would be regarded as a beau geste?

I regard the Deputy's suggestion as utterly fantastic.

Deputies

Oh!
