Vol. 127 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Anti-Partition Meeting Incidents.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why Radio Éireann omitted, in the three English news summaries on 6th November, 1951, any mention of not insignificant incidents that occured prior to, during or after a public meeting of anti-partitionists held at Enniskillen on the night of 5th November, 1951, and whether he will arrange that the ill-treatment received by some of those who attended the meeting and who desire the unity of Ireland, should receive the widest possible publicity.

By the time Radio Éireann's news bulletins of 6th November came on the air, the news of the incidents at the Enniskillen meeting on the previous night had already appeared in the newspapers. On the night of 5th November it was not possible for Radio Éireann's Enniskillen correspondent to get a telephone report of the incidents through in time for inclusion in the 10.10 p.m. bulletin.

With regard to the second part of the question, what appeared on the newspapers the day before would not be regarded as "news" for the bulletins and it is not journalistic practice to make further reference to an event unless some new development occurs.

Is the Minister aware that there is a general feeling that Radio Éireann tends to play down any matters relating to Partition and will the Minister discuss the matter with the Director of Broadcasting?

That is a separate question.
