Vol. 128 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin City Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the serious charges made, in a recent report by a T.U.C. sub-committee, alleging that in many of the schools in Dublin City there is serious overcrowding and considerable dilapidation, with a complete absence of elementary amenities; and, if so, whether on the whole he has satisfied himself that these charges are justified, and whether he is prepared to bring them to the attention of those primarily responsible for such schools with a view to obtaining some improvement and alleviation of these conditions.

I have seen a copy of the memorandum to which the Deputy refers. I am aware that the conditions in many schools in Dublin and elsewhere fall short, in varying degree, of modern standards, but I could not agree in general with the description which the memorandum gives of the position in Dublin City. It is my constant endeavour to arrange that the conditions in our schools generally shall be improved as rapidly as circumstances permit, with particular reference to the cases most urgently requiring attention.
