Vol. 128 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the Carson estate at Belmullet, County Mayo, was acquired by the Land Commission some years ago and if he will state when it is hoped that these lands will be divided amongst the congests of the area.

The Carson holdings were resumed in 1950 and 1951. The lands are to be utilised for the rearrangement of holdings in the district. An adequate rearrangement scheme cannot be prepared pending the outcome of proceedings for the acquisition of other lands in the area.

Can the Minister say when proceedings for the acquisition of other lands in that area will take place?

I cannot answer that question at the moment.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when it is proposed to acquire the Shaw estate at Belmullet, County Mayo, and have the holdings rearranged and lands divided.

The Land Commission have decided to institute proceedings for the acquisition of the Shaw estate but it is not possible to state at this stage what the outcome will be.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when it is proposed to have the striping and rearrangement of the holdings on the Carter estate and Hassard estate situate at Poolboy and Baralty and other areas near Belmullet, County Mayo, carried out.

The Carter estate comprises some 600 holdings. Many of the holdings have already been rearranged and proposals are being formulated for the rearrangement of the holdings in several other townlands on the estate. The other outstanding cases will be dealt with according as circumstances permit.

The rearrangement of the Hassard Estate cannot be undertaken until a difficulty as to boundaries has been settled.

The townland of Baralty is on the Bingham estate and the rearrangement of the holdings there is in progress at present.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) the present position regarding the acquisition of the Walsh estate, Brownstown and Coolylaughnan (Record No. S.9988), County Mayo, and (b) if a date has been fixed for taking possession; and, if so, what date; and, further, if he will give similar particulars as regards the Mannion estate in the same area (Record No. S.9848).

The proceedings for the acquisition of these estates have reached the stage at which prices have been fixed by the Land Commission subject to appeal. In neither case has a date been fixed for taking possession.
