Vol. 128 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Deputies' Allowance.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that, due to increased charges for hotel accommodation, travelling and various other expenses, a large number of Deputies find it impossible to meet their commitments on the present Dáil allowance; and, if so, if he will consider the introduction of proposals for legislation to increase the allowance to £1,000 per year.

While I do not question that greater expense is being incurred now by deputies than in 1947 in respect of hotel accommodation and under certain other heads, I cannot accept the suggestion that a large number of Deputies find their Dáil allowance insufficient to cover their commitments in these matters. So far as the cost of transport is concerned I should mention that the question of the rate of car allowance to Deputies in respect of journeys to and from Dublin on public business has recently been raised with me by the Committee of Procedure and Privileges.

Will the Minister say when he proposes to give a decision on that?

In fairness to the Minister, may I say the matter is under discussion?
