Vol. 128 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of River Maine.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give an assurance that when the drainage of the rivers Brick and Cashen is completed or nearing completion, the machinery used thereon will be transferred directly to the Maine in order to carry out the long-awaited scheme in that area.

As indicated in reply to a recent question I am not in a position to say when it will be possible to undertake the preparation of a scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, for the River Maine catchment area. I cannot, therefore, give the assurance sought by the Deputy.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary believe that it would be a right thing to allow the machinery to leave Kerry after the Brick and Cashen scheme is finished without turning it on to the Maine drainage scheme? Does he not believe that the correct thing to do would be to leave the machinery in the county and to turn it on to the Maine drainage scheme?

I am sure there are other counties that would like to see the machinery there also and their schemes finished.

May I tell the Parliamentary Secretary that the Kerry people will not allow this machinery to leave Kerry until the Maine drainage scheme is finished?

Some of the machinery in Kerry on the Brick and Cashen scheme would not be suitable for the Maine scheme according to my information.
