Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Number and Value of Motor Vehicles.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) the number of private motor cars in the Republic of Ireland for each of the years 1949, 1950 and for the latest date in 1951; (b) the number of commercial motor vehicles for each of the same years; (c) the total value of all such motor vehicles for each of these years, and (d) the total amount of money paid for all motor parts imported (tyres and tubes excepted) for each of the years 1949, 1950 and for the latest date in 1951.

(a) The number of private motor cars under current licence at mid-August was 71,911 in 1949, 85,140 in 1950 and 96,714 in 1951.

(b) The corresponding number of commercial goods vehicles was 23,698 in 1949, 24,726 in 1950 and 26,721 in 1951.

(c) No estimate is available of the total value of such motor vehicles.

(d) The total value (c.i.f.) of all motor parts imported (tyres and tubes excepted) was £5,696,499 in 1949, £6,838,169 in 1950 and £6,568,997 in the period 1st January to 31st October, 1951.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not consider that it is time for the Government to consider the advisability of manufacturing at least some of those things within the country?

That is a separate question.
