Vol. 129 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gorey Leather Factory.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that when the leather factory at Gorey closed for the Christmas holidays the total staff was 180 workers, but that on resumption of work only 85 were taken back and as this has been the cause of grave concern and loss to the persons concerned, if he will have the matter investigated.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a large proportion of the employees of the Gorey Leather Company have been laid off; and, if so, if he will take steps to deal with the matter.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 27 and 28 together.

I understand that the Deputies are familiar with the circumstances which obliged the Gorey Leather Company, as an alternative to the complete closing down of the tannery, to lay off a substantial number of workers. The company states that the re-employment of additional workers will be dependent on sales. Any action which I can take to assist the company in expanding sales will be readily taken.

Will the Minister consider buying the stockpile held by the factory at present as I am informed that that would be sufficient to put the factory in full production again?

If the Deputy is referring to stocks held by the company against Government orders, I understand that some action is being taken in regard to that.

The Minister said that there was no stockpiling done.

Will Deputies make up their minds as to whether there was stockpiling or whether they were preparing for an emergency or planning for peace?

Surely the Minister should be able to tell us.

Were you preparing for an emergency or planning for peace?

Have they disappeared like the fertilisers?
