Vol. 129 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Territorial Waters Extension.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the recent decision of the International Court at The Hague, Holland, he will take immediate steps to extend the boundaries of the Irish territorial waters and thereby protect our inshore fisheries.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the tremendous importance to our fishing industry of the results arising from the recent decision of the International Court of Justice at The Hague in favour of Norway in her dispute with Great Britain as to the definition of territorial waters, whereby the territorial waters of Norway are enlarged very considerably, he will state whether the Government is prepared to take steps to ensure the application of this decision to our territorial waters, and simultaneously to take the necessary steps to expand and develop our fishing industry so as to take full advantage of the additional fishing grounds brought under our control.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether his attention has been drawn to the recent decision of the International Court of Justice at The Hague in a dispute between Great Britain and Norway as to the definition and extent of territorial waters in international law, and whether, in view of the importance of this decision for the preservation and development of inshore fishing, the Government will consider taking steps to secure the application of this decision to the territorial waters of Ireland.

With your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 124, 125 and 126 together.

The official text of the decision referred to by the Deputies is not yet available to my Department Until the official text has been studied it will not be possible to say if the decision establishes any new principles of international law of general application.
