Vol. 129 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Radio Telegraph Institute.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether in view of the great service given by the Cork Radio Telegraph Institute at the end of last year when all other radio stations were out of commission he will now agree that this station can usefully serve the proposed Cork air service.

I am aware of the fact that during the stormy conditions at the end of last year the facilities of the Cork Radio Telegraph Institute were made available to the Department of Posts and Telegraphs and that they were of great value in maintaining certain communications at that time. I have no information that the institute provided any aviation radio services.

I am having examined a report made by the air companies about the possibility of operating regular services from Cork airfield. In the course of this examination all relevant factors will be taken into account.

Is the Minister not aware that officials from the Valentia radio station were transferred to the Cork Radio Institute to supply services, not for the post office, but for shipping within the vicinity of Cork?

I have no reason to doubt that.
