Vol. 129 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Interference with Radio Reception.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he will take appropriate steps whereby persons in possession of electrical apparatus or equipment, the operation of which results in interference with radio reception, shall be compelled to install suppressors or such other device as will eliminate further possibility of interference.

If the voluntary cooperation of persons whose electrical apparatus caused interference were not forthcoming generally I would have no hesitation in seeking compulsory powers to require such persons to have the interference suppressed. My information, however, is that the number of persons who refuse to co-operate in this matter is very small. All dealers in electrical apparatus were recently circularised and we are taking further action as a result of the replies received, a proportion of which were satisfactory. The inspection service in the Department has recently been expanded. Legislation, difficult to administer and cumbersome in character, will be avoided if at all possible.
