Vol. 129 No. 8

- The Dickens Estate (County Mayo).

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission will give immediate and prior attention to the rearrangement and enlargement of existing holdings and the provision of new houses on the rundale holdings on the Dickens estate, Currane, Achill Island.

The Dickens estate is the subject of consideration in connection with the general question of the rearrangement of unvested estates. It is proposed as soon as staff can be made available to have an inspection made of this estate with a view to formulating rearrangement proposals.

Can the Minister state when it is likely this rearrangement will be carried out?

I cannot.

Will it be retrospective?

Would the Minister give a direction to the commissioners to give immediate priority to that estate for the benefit of the whole of North Mayo? I think the Minister knows the conditions there. They are appalling.

May I remind the Minister that a very large percentage of the people in that area have to migrate and that is principally due to the fact that that estate has not been dealt with by the Land Commission? Can he hold out any hope for these people in the immediate future?
