Vol. 129 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turkey Prices.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what prices will be payable for turkeys next December.

Mr. Walsh

The producer's price for turkeys in any Christmas season depends on the price expected to be realised in the British markets that season. I am not in a position so early in the year to appraise what the likely price situation will be next season.

Would it be possible for the Minister to forecast, at a reasonably earlier date, the price which will be available for producers, in view of the fact that the prospective guaranteed price payable for turkeys in November and December will have a profound effect on the total number of birds reared?

Mr. Walsh

We cannot state the price at this stage. As the Deputy is himself aware, inquiries will have to be made. It is only some time in October that the Department can announce the price for the coming season.
