Vol. 129 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Area of Land in Hands of Land Commission.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he will state the area of land in the possession of the Land Commission on 1st March each year from 1945 to 1952.

Particulars of the areas on hands at the 1st of March in the years in question are not readily available but the position at the 31st of March in these years was as follows:—

1945

95,267 acres.

1946

90,317,,

1947

85,839,,

1948

88,726,,

1949

80,800,,

1950

94,699,,

1951

93,854,,

12/3/52 approx.

90,000,,

It will be appreciated that the greater part of these areas comprise bog, mountain and waste.

The areas mentioned do not include some 45,000 acres being the remnants of estates taken over from the former Congested Districts Board. This area comprises 20,000 acres of bog, mountain and waste and 25,000 acres of agricultural land which has been let for many years to tenants in whom the lands will probably be eventually vested.
