Vol. 130 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flour and Bread Subsidy.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what amount is paid to each miller in the Republic by way of flour and bread subsidy.

The flour subsidy is not paid direct to flour millers. It is paid to Grain Importers (Éire), Limited, the central body set up in 1939 to deal with wheat imports. Imported wheat is distributed to millers by that company at such a price as will enable millers to sell flour of 85 per cent. extraction at the controlled price. The losses sustained by the company in so doing are repaid to the company at regular intervals out of the Vote for flour subsidy.

Surely the Minister should be able to tell us what each miller is getting out of the subsidy?

I do not control that.
