Vol. 130 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the urgent necessity for setting up a co-ordinating committee to assist him and the school managers in fast-developing housing areas around the city with a view to making plans in advance for the building of schools and thus avoiding the present conditions that prevail in all the new housing areas.

A committee representative of the various interests concerned was established in 1949 to co-ordinate and to expedite procedure for the provision of new schools in new housing areas in Dublin City and district.

As a result of the committee's activities considerable progress has been made in the advance planning of school facilities for this type of area.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Education if the plans for the new schools in Finglas have been passed by his Department and if they have been submitted for tender; and, if so, if he will state when the schools are likely to be in the hands of the builders and the date on which it is hoped they will be available for the children at present without adequate school accommodation.

Sketch plans for new schools have been prepared and approved but certain other preliminary arrangements have yet to be made before the Department will be in a position to sanction a grant towards the cost of the erection of new schools. I am unable to say at present when building operations will be commenced but I can assure the Deputy that every effort will be made to expedite matters.
