Vol. 130 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Heavy Pigs.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, in view of the difficulty of marketing heavy pigs which cannot be disposed of at home at anything like the cost of production, and also in view of the fact that farmers were, and are, compelled to hold their pigs to this stage as they are not wanted at our factories, he will again permit the export of this type of pig on foot when they can be sold at an economic price.

Mr. Walsh

I have the question of the export of bacon pigs under active consideration, and hope to be able to make a further announcement very shortly.

Is the Minister aware that there is a considerable surplus, particularly of heavy bacon pigs, to be disposed of?

Mr. Walsh

I understand that.

Can the Minister say when he will be in a position to make an announcement?

Mr. Walsh

Possibly next week.
