Vol. 130 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Oats Supplies.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether it has been brought to his notice that County Galway farmers cannot now dispose of their oats supplies except at depressed and entirely unprofitable prices; and, if so, if he will indicate the steps he proposes to take in relief of the position.

Mr. Walsh

I would refer the Deputy to the reply in regard to oats which I gave to Deputy McQuillan on 19th March. There is nothing I can usefully add to that reply.

The Minister will recall that he stated some time ago that the most profitable way in which growers could dispose of their oats was to feed it to live stock, and that farmers who had oats on hands should be able to find a market between now and the next harvest. May I point out to the Minister that there are many farmers in Galway who have not sufficient stock to absorb their surplus supplies, and so far the market he referred to has not become available?

Mr. Walsh

We are still a long time from the next harvest. At the moment, spring seed is going out, and will be going out for the next two or three weeks.

70/- a barrel is not bad.
