Vol. 131 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Travellers to Eucharistic Congress.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that many Irish citizens have arranged to visit Barcelona for the Eucharistic Congress at the end of May next and whether, in view of the great demand for hotel accommodation there and the consequent increased charges and expenses, he will consider the desirability of granting a reasonable increase in the very inadequate travel allowances of £25 per person.

I am not aware of the number of Irish citizens who have arranged to visit Barcelona for the Eucharistic Congress, nor have I information as to the charges for hotel accommodation in that city. I do not agree that the basic travel allowance of £25 per adult can be described as very inadequate and, moreover, I am informed that intending pilgrims to the Eucharistic Congress can make arrangements through a number of agencies and organisations which will enable them to attend the congress for an expenditure which does not involve any excess on the present basic travel allowance. The Deputy is, no doubt, aware that the cost of transport to Barcelona and back can be met in Irish currency by the traveller before his departure. In all the circumstances, I regret I am unable to meet the request in the Deputy's question.
