Vol. 131 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Connemara Land Reclamation.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the yearly average number of acres reclaimed in Connemara and the average cost to the State per acre under (a) the land reclamation scheme, 1932-33 to 1940-41, (b) the farm improvements scheme, 1941-42 to 1949-50, and (c) the Land Reclamation Act, 1949.

Mr. Walsh

The information sought at (a) and (b) may be obtained by reference to the tables published in the relevant annual reports of the Minister for Agriculture, with the exception of the years 1932-33 and 1933-34 in respect of which separate figures for Connemara are not available.

As to (c) in the Deputy's question, I would refer him to the reply I gave yesterday to a similar question by Deputy Dillon.

Arising out of that reply, where did the Minister for External Affairs get the daft figures that he was quoting in the House?

Mr. Walsh

That is a separate question.

We know how the cost arose. It was only when Deputy Mongan died Deputy Dillon started out with the £200 per acre land reclamation scheme in Connemara. It was for the purpose of getting some votes in the bye-election.
