Vol. 131 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Surtax Statistics.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (1) the amount of surtax assessed for collection in each of the financial years ending 31st March, 1951, and 31st March, 1952, and (2) the total amount collected in each of the years mentioned.

(1) as to part (1) of the question I take it that the Deputy has in mind the amounts of surtax assessed in each of the financial years ended 31st March, 1951, and 31st March, 1952. The amounts were £2,068,578 and £2,580,429, respectively.

(2) The total amounts of surtax collected in each of the financial years in question were £1,611,701 and £1,908,820, respectively. (The latter figure may be subject to slight adjustment when the accounts are finalised.)

In connection with the foregoing particulars, it is to be borne in mind that the figures of tax assessed and tax collected for each of the two years in question are not comparable mainly because of the fact that appeals and claims for statutory adjustments are made in a number of cases. Furthermore, I must point out that while the figures in the second part of the answer do not precisely tally with those printed in the White Papers showing Estimates of Receipts and Expenditure which are £1,611,000 for the year 1950-51 and £1,900,000 for the year 1951-52, the reason is that the answer follows the exact terms of the question and gives the amounts collected during the years 1950-51 and 1951-52 whereas the White Papers give the actual Exchequer receipts.
