Vol. 131 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soldiers and Sailors Trust Houses

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that when tenants of soldiers and sailors trust houses die the children are given three months' notice to quit; and if, in view of the proposed legislation to sell the houses to the tenants, he will recommend that all legal proceedings to take possession from the widows or children be withdrawn.

Representations were made to the trust some time ago but it claims to be legally bound in certain circumstances to terminate tenancies in favour of qualified ex-servicemen. I understand, however, that it is the practice of the trust to allow the widows of deceased ex-servicemen to continue in occupation pending the promotion by the British Government of legislation enabling the houses to be sold.

So far as the Minister for Local Government is concerned, is he aware whether any progress has been made by the British Government with regard to the introduction of such legislation?

We are endeavouring, with the Department of External Affairs, to induce them to speed this matter up as quickly as possible.

Will the Minister say whether such legislation will require complementary legislation here?

No, as far as I know.
