Vol. 132 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Statistics.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the numbers of unemployed registered at latest available date at offices of his Department in Tullamore, Birr, Edenderry, Portarlington, Rathdowney, Portlaoighise, Roscrea, Carlow and Athy.

The numbers of persons registered on Saturday, 24th May, 1952, at the local offices mentioned by the Deputy were as follows:—

Tullamore

292

Birr

87

Edenderry

62

Portarlington

51

Rathdowney

29

Portlaoighise

167

Roscrea

112

Carlow

143

Athy

49

Surely the Parliamentary Secretary must be aware that in the case of Carlow and Athy there are quite a number of registered unemployed from County Laoighis in that area. The details of the numbers of registered unemployed which he gives for the areas concerned are in no way in accordance with the reply I have received from his colleague, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance.

There is a decrease of 536 in the registered unemployed in the past two months and in Tullamore there are 186 fewer registered as they have been absorbed by the worsted mills.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that that occurs at this time every year?
