Vol. 132 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - In-Calf Cow and Heifer Export.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will consider banning the export of in-calf cows and heifers in order to build up the cattle population of the country.

Mr. Walsh

I do not consider that the action suggested by the Deputy would be in the best interests of the live-stock industry.

Is the Minister aware that the cow and heifer population is on the decrease and that unless steps are taken to arrest that decline a very serious problem will arise?

Mr. Walsh

There have been fewer heifers and cows exported in the last year than in any year during the past 12 years.

Is the Minister aware that the value of an in-calf heifer at the present time is approximately £10 less than the value of a store beast? Does the Minister not think there is a problem there which ought to be tackled immediately if we are to retain our milch cow population?

Mr. Walsh

The price of beef cattle is always much higher than the price of milch cattle.
