Vol. 132 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Potato Export Market.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the large stocks of potatoes held by Wexford farmers, he will consider the advisability of seeking an export market so that they may be disposed of in the immediate future.

Mr. Walsh

I am not aware that large stocks of old potatoes are held by Wexford farmers. I understand that there is a small surplus which should readily be absorbed as stock feed.

It would not be possible at this time of the year to find an export market for the quantity on hands.

Is the Minister aware that there is a notable shortage of potatoes in the United States at the moment, so notable that potatoes are rationed? Perhaps the United States might provide a market for our surplus potatoes.

Mr. Walsh

No. Due to root diseases and so forth the American Government has prohibited the importation of potatoes from this country.

In the changed circumstances would it occur to the Minister to find out whether the American authorities would review the situation now in the light of their own shortage?

Mr. Walsh

No. Due to root diseases the American authorities will not permit our potatoes to enter the United States.
