Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allihies Copper and Sulphur Deposits.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will have a further survey of the copper and sulphur deposits in the Allihies district carried out.

When I answered a somewhat similar question by the Deputy in Dáil Éireann on 7th November last, I indicated that I had been considering the possibility of fresh mineral surveys in a number of areas, including Allihies, where the mineral indications afford a prospect of profitable development. At that stage I had in mind the possibility of an exploration scheme with the assistance of E.C.A. Before the consideration of the matter had been finalised by E.C.A., American economic assistance to this country was terminated. In the altered circumstances, I am considering the matter afresh, but I am not yet in a position to say what steps it may be possible to take to have surveys carried out in these areas.
