Vol. 132 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Programmes.

asked the Minister for Education if he will ensure that teachers receive one year's notice of the list of books which are being removed from school programmes, and thus save them the cost of purchasing books which will not be required during the school year.

The present practice is that any book whose title has appeared on the list of books approved for use in national schools in any year may continue to be used for the following two years in schools where there is already a supply of the books, even though the book has been removed from the list of books approved for those following years. The present practice seems to me to meet the situation which the Deputy has in mind.

Is the Minister aware that the Department of Education has placed books, for sale to school teachers, on their list and removed them from the curriculum a few months after they were purchased by the principals of the schools?

They may be removed from the list but they may be useful two years afterwards.

Why remove them?

Well, as a matter of fact, I myself remove a number of books from my own library every year. I get fed up with them.

You do not make use of them two years after you remove them.
