Vol. 133 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin City Evictions.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of decrees for possession of flats and houses that have been given in Dublin courts for the year ending 30th June, 1952, and the number of evictions during the same period.

During the year ended 30th June, 1952, 3,395 orders for possession of flats and houses were obtained in the Dublin courts. There were 193 evictions.

Mr. Byrne

Does the Minister not consider that the time has arrived when evictions should be stopped in the City of Dublin? Does he not think that proper protection should be provided for people who are being evicted through no fault of their own but merely because the owners of the rooms or accommodation they are renting want to let these rooms for a higher rent?

Mr. Boland

The Deputy is a member of the Dublin Corporation, and I would like to draw his attention to the fact that 2,217 of these decrees were obtained by the Dublin Corporation.

Mr. Byrne

I wanted the Minister to say that, and I will use what he said with great effect in another place.

Mr. Boland

That is the place to use it.
