Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Tariffs or Restrictions.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will indicate the nature of the tariffs or restrictions granted since June, 1951, and the nature of the new tariffs or restrictions granted.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the information asked for in the question.

Following is the statement:—

CUSTOMS DUTIES INCREASED

Commodity

Nature of Increase

Personal Clothing and Wearing Apparel.

Increases were made under various headings up to 75% Full, 50% Preferential (United Kingdom and Canada).

Hard Surface Floor Coverings.

The duty of 6d. the sq. yard flat rate, was increased to 1/- the sq. yard.

Razor Blades

The specific duty of 12/- the gross, flat rate, was increased to 24/- the gross.

Drinking Glasses

A duty of 50% ad valorem, full rate, 33?% ad valorem, preferential rate (United Kingdom and Canada) or 9d. the article (6d. preferential, United Kingdom and Canada) was imposed on all drinking glasses in lieu of a duty of 50% ad valorem, full rate, and 33?% ad valorem, preferential rate (United Kingdom and Canada) on drinking glasses exceeding 3½d. in value.

Knitted Woollen Fabric

The duty of 37½% ad valorem, full rate, and 25% ad valorem, preferential rate, was increased to 75% ad valorem, full rate, and 50% ad valorem preferential rate.

Glue Gelatine and Size

The duty of 45% ad valorem, full rate, and 30% ad valorem, preferential rate, was increased to 75% ad valorem, full rate, and 50% ad valorem, preferential rate.

Leather

The duty of 37½% ad valorem, full rate, and 25% ad valorem, preferential rate, was increased to 75% ad valorem, full rate, and 50% ad valorem, preferential rate.

Malt Extract and preparations of Malt Extract and Fish Liver Oil.

The duty of 50% ad valorem, full rate, and 33?% ad valorem, preferential rate, was increased to 75% ad valorem, full rate, and 50% ad valorem, preferential rate.

QUANTITATIVE RESTRICTIONS ON IMPORTS.

1. By Emergency Powers Order dated 25th April, 1952, the importation of knitted woollen garments was prohibited except under licence.

2. Orders under the Control of Imports Acts imposing quantitative restrictions on the following commodities have been made since June, 1951:—

Woollen and Worsted Yarns

Single Cotton Yarns

Commercial motor vehicles.

3. The following Quota Orders were amended since June, 1951:

Woolen and Worsted Piece Goods.

Amended to include Spun Rayon Suitings and other Woollen type Cloths.

Motor Car Bodies

Amended to include the bodies of commercial road vehicles.

Ladies' Felt Hats

Amended to include hats costing up to 21/-.

4. Import Quotas permitted for six monthly periods under the following Quota Orders were reduced as indicated below:—

Woollen and Worsted Piece Goods.

Import quota reduced from 2,500,000 sq. yds. to 1,100,000 sq. yds., on 1st September, 1951 and to 75,000 sq. yds. from 1st February, 1952.

Cotton Piece Goods

Import quota reduced from 19,850,000 sq. yds. to 15,175,000 sq. yds. from 1st December, 1951 and to 12,680,000 sq. yds. from 1st June, 1952.

Silk and Artificial Silk Hose

Import quota reduced from 2,500,000 pairs to 1,500,000 pairs on 1st September, 1951; to 500,000 pairs on 1st March, 1952; to 100,000 pairs on 1st September, 1952.

Ladies' Hats

Import quota reduced from 50,000 hats to 25,000 hats on 1st July, 1951, and the price of hats subject to quota restrictions increased from 15/11. to 21/- per hat on 22nd August, 1951.

Motor tyres and tubes.

Import quota reduced from 45,000 to 35,000 on 1st August, 1951; to 17,500 on 1st February, 1952; to 6,500 on 1st August, 1952.

Brushes

Import quota reduced from 96,000 articles to 72,000 on 1st January, 1952; to 36,000 on 1st July, 1952.

Rubber Boots and Shoes.

Quota reduced from 400,000 units to 150,000 units on 1st February, 1952.

Sparking Plugs

Import quota reduced from 50,000 units to 30,000 units on 1st November, 1951; to 5,000 on 1st May, 1952.

Laminated Springs

Import quota reduced from £10,000 to £3,000 on 1st April, 1952; to £1,000 on 1st October, 1952.
