Vol. 134 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Department of Justice Appointments.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what are the essential requirements as regards knowledge of Irish prescribed for appointments of (a) writing assistant; (b) clerical officer in the Department of Justice.

Open competitive examinations are held annually by the Civil Service Commission for posts as writing assistant and clerical officer in the Civil Service. Assignments as a result of these examinations are made to all Departments, including the Department of Justice, the grades in question being general service ones.

Candidates for writing assistant posts must secure a minimum of 50 per cent. in a written Irish test of seventh class standard; candidates for clerical officer posts must obtain at least 40 per cent. in a written Irish test of intermediate certificate standard. It is also essential for either appointment to reach a 50 per cent. qualifying mark in oral Irish.
