Vol. 134 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Football Pools.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate what steps have been taken to prevent the transfer of money to the Six Counties for football pools in view of the fact that portion of this money is being paid as tax in that area and so assists in the maintenance of the partition administration.

Questions relating to the operation here of competitions of the kind known as football pools, whether promoted by persons within the State or otherwise, are primarily a matter for the Department of Justice. In pursuance of the provisions of Sections 33 and 34 of the Betting Act, 1931, however, all postal packets addressed to persons outside the State and suspected of containing communications relating to the placing of bets outside the State are detained by the postal authorities and passed to the Revenue Commissioners for examination. The Revenue Commissioners publish periodically Press notices directing attention to these provisions and indicating that completed football pool coupons come within their ambit.
