Vol. 135 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Servants and Seanad Nominations.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he now has had satisfactory explanations from all three of the civil servants whose names were attached to documents as sponsors of a candidate for the Seanad election to fill the vacancy in the National University.

I have received satisfactory explanations from two of the civil servants concerned. I do not regard the explanation received from the third wholly satisfactory. He has stated, however, that his name was improperly appended to the election address in that he had no opportunity of seeing the document and did not know that it advocated certain policies with which no civil servant could publicly identify himself. As appropriate action in his regard has been taken at departmental level, I do not propose to pursue the matter further.
