Vol. 136 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Wool and Fibre Fabrics.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether an import licence was granted to import 100,000 square yards of afgaline wool and fibre fabrics; and, if so, the name of the person or persons to whom the licence was granted.

Fabrics containing wool and weighing 4½ oz. or more a square yard are subject to quantitative control and can be imported only under licence under the Control of Imports Acts. No licence has been granted toany importer for 100,000 square yards of afgaline fabric of this type.

How many yards were imported? Was a permit granted for any number of yards?

For the information of the Deputy, may I say that the aggregate of all the licences is only 30,000 square yards?

That is 4½ oz. and over. What about under 4½ oz.?

I am talking about the goods to which this Order relates.

Everybody is aware there is afgaline fabric weighing less than 4½ oz. as well as that over 4½ oz.

The Order applies to 4½ oz. and over.

What about under 4½ oz.?

It is not subject to any licence duty.

You can bring in as much as you like of it.

You do not need a licence.
