Vol. 136 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Athlone Woollen Mills.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether the Athlone woollen mills are likely to be put into full production in the near future.

The Deputy's question relates to the intentions of a private commercial concern.

As I stated in reply to a Dáil question by the Deputy on December 5th, 1951, I should like to see the Athlone woollen mills in full production again, and I have informed the company of my willingness to assist the company to this end in every way within my power.

I feel sure the Minister is aware that that factory wasburned down nearly ten years ago and that since that took place little or no effort has been made by this company to reopen the factory and give employment to the town. When I raised this matter two years ago when Deputy Morrissey was Minister for Industry and Commerce, the present Minister stated that if he were in power and in office again he would make sure that that woollen mills would be reopened and put into full production. Now that he has the chance back and is in power again, would he not agree that, if this company is not prepared to live up to its responsibilities, in view of the heavy and extensive unemployment that exists in Athlone and district, he should take steps to make this woollen mills a Government concern and run it by the State instead?

The Deputy will appreciate that the owners and managers of private concerns frequently inform my Department of their intentions. It would be a bad principle, however, if I were to reply here in the House to questions regarding the management of private concerns.

May I point out that one of the reasons why this factory has not gone back into full production is that the people who have responsibility for it have bigger connections outside this country in Britain and are subject to outside influence and so they are not prepared to open it for manufactures here?

Could the Minister give an indication as to the reason for the delay? Is he aware of the delay or is there any valid reason for it?

I could not say I am aware of the reason. I have my ideas about it.
