Vol. 136 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tipperary Generating Station.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will request the E.S.B. to consider the question of having a turf-burning generating station erected at Derry-hegan, Littleton, Thurles, County Tipperary.

I am advised that there is a local market for all the turf produced in the Littleton bog. Apart from this I understand that the full production of this bog would not be sufficient to operate a generating station on a reasonably economic basis.

Is the Minister aware that the position will be very seriousin relation to unemployment in this area if there is not a market for this turf?

The question relates to Littleton bog, which is one of the permanent schemes of Bord Na Móna, and there has never been any difficulty in disposing of all the turf produced on that bog.
