Vol. 137 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Horses.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in the £3,000,000 which he stated was the export value of our horses, he had included the value of horses exported for slaughter.

Mr. Walsh

Exports of horses are not required to be classified according to the purpose for which they are exported, but horses exported for temporary periods only are shownseparately in the trade statistics. My statement to which the Deputy refers was that the net value of the export trade in horses is about £3,000,000 per year, that is the value of exports minus the value of imports, omitting horses temporarily exported and imported.

Does that include horses for slaughter as well as for sale?

Mr. Walsh

It includes all horses.

It does not include Tulyar's progeny.

If he ever has any.
