Vol. 137 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dressed Meat Factory for Sligo.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if it can definitely be stated that a dressed meat factory will be established in Sligo.

Mr. Walsh

One premises in Sligo is already registered under the Agricultural Produce (Fresh Meat) Acts for the export of dressed meat. A proposal to establish another dressed meat export premises there has been mentioned to my Department, but its establishment is a matter for the private interests concerned. Any premises so established would have to be registered as indicated before commencing operations.

Would the Minister, instead of paying attention to building new factories, try to restore the trade so that the factories which were engaged in this business and had to close down could get a chance to reopen?

Mr. Walsh

The Minister does not build new factories.

Would the Minister consider asking his colleague, the Minister for Industry and Commerce, to take the levy of £3 per head off cattle hides with a view to stimulating the erection of new factories and business in the existing ones?
