Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Advertising Expenditure.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amount paid in respect of advertising to date from 1st April, 1952, by all Departments of State to (a) the daily and (b) the provincial Press; and, further, if he will state the circulation of each paper in which advertisements appeared.

The amounts paid from 1st April, 1952, to 31st January, 1953, the latest date for which returns are available, were (a) the daily Press —£19,925 3s. 4d. and (b) the provincial Press—£21,925 6s. 1d.

Circulation figures for all papers, Dublin and provincial, in which Government advertisements appeared in the period, are in the form of a tabular statement which I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

CIRCULATIONS OF PAPERS RECEIVING GOVERNMENT ADVERTISING.

Where marked (certified) this means that the figure can be substantiated by an independent accountant's certificate. The other figures have been estimated as it was not found possible to obtain a certified statement from the publishers.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total amount paid to the Irish Press, Limited, by all Departments of State in connection with public notices, advertising, etc., for the year 1952 and the amount not yet paid in respect of that year to Irish Press, Limited.

The total amount paid to the Irish Press, Limited, for the year 1952, was £8,757 11s. 3d. There is no unpaid amount due in respect of that year.

As I feel sure that the Deputy would desire to have a complete picture of the position, I am also giving him the corresponding figures for the other Dublin and Cork daily newspapers, as follows:—Independent Newspapers Limited, £8,930 1s. 6d.; Irish Times Limited, £5,938 7s. 9d.; "Cork Examiner", £4,550 9s. 7d.
