Vol. 137 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Construction Supervising Allowance.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if, in view of thepresent financial stringency, he will consider terminating the payment at present being made at the rate of £300 a year to the Secretary of his Department for supervising work at the Store Street office building, seeing that another officer of his Department and an engineer are similarly engaged and that the resources of the Office of Public Works are available.

The allowance to which the Deputy refers was granted by my predecessor, and I am not prepared to cancel or alter his decision.

The Deputy is wrong in certain of his assumptions. The resources of the Office of Public Works, for example, are not available in connection with the Store Street undertaking.
