Vol. 137 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motoring Convictions.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of persons who were convicted during 1951 and 1952, respectively, of driving a mechanically propelled vehicle under the influence of intoxicating liquor, the number of such persons who were (a) sentenced to imprisonment, (b) fined and (c) whose licences were suspended.

Disqualification for holding a driving licence is a statutory consequence of a conviction for driving or attempting to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle while drunk.

In 1951, 210 persons were convicted and of this number 23 were sentenced to imprisonment and fines were imposed in 188 cases. The corresponding figures for 1952 were 240, 49 and 195 respectively.
