Vol. 137 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Patrols.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has satisfied himself, owing to the increased City of Dublin radius, that there are sufficient Gardaí properly to conduct patrolling, and thereby reduce the inadequacy of protection to citizens from attacks against persons and property, including burglaries; and, further, if he will state what steps, if any, have been taken in this regard, and the extent of such steps.

Mr. Boland

In April, recruits who are at present in training will be allocated for duty in the Dublin Metropolitan Division. This will increase the strength of Gardaí available for duty in the division by approximately 173 and will enable more effective measures to be taken for the policing of the area.

Is the Minister satisfiedthat when these recruits are added to the Dublin strength there will be a sufficiency of police in this area?

Mr. Boland

I would not think so, but that is all we have available at the moment.

Will he indicate if he intends to continue recruiting to bring the strength up as soon as possible to what is needed?
