Vol. 137 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lacken (County Mayo) Tide-Land.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will direct the land rehabilitation section of his Department to undertake the erection of a barrier across the tide-land at Lacken, Ballina, County Mayo, to prevent high tides overrunning an area of approximately 700 acres of otherwise arable land and thus restore this land to productivity and relieve congestion.

There is nothing I can usefully add to the reply I gave the Deputy on 31st October, 1951, to a previous question by him on this subject.

Is the Minister aware that the land I referred to is not estuarine marsh land and that, quite apart from the reclamation of land, this work if carried out would provide a means of crossing the strand for the tenants at Lacken who at present have no means of crossing the strand on their way to Mass? I mentioned this matter to the Parliamentary Secretary recently. Would the Minister not consider that there are 700 acres of land which is not estuarine marsh land which could be reclaimed, and could he not do something to make that land available for people who are land hungry in the district?

Mr. Walsh

That is the question which has not been decided, whether it is or is not estuarine marsh land.
