Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agricultural Workers' Wages (Wicklow).

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the statutory minimum wage payable with out board to an adult agricultural worker in each of the agricultural wage districts of County Wicklow in the first week of March, 1953, and in the same week of 1952, 1951 and 1950.

The information asked for by the Deputy is in the form of a tabular statement, which itis proposed to have included in the Official Report.

The following is the statement:—

For the purpose of the Agricultural Wages Board's Orders each county is a wages district, but the districts are put into groups for the purpose of differentiating between one part of the State and another. There are in all four groups and some counties (i.e. districts) are included in two groups. Wicklow is unique in that the county is divided amongst all four groups.

Rate per week for a male adult agricultural worker, exclusive of board and any other benefits or advantages as prescribed in the relevant Orders, viz.:—

(1) Agricultural Wages (Minimum Rates) (No. 2) Order, 1948, as amended by the Agricultural Wages (Minimum Rates) (No. 2) Order, 1948 (Amendment) Order, 1949, and the Agricultural Wages (Minimum Rates) (No. 2) Order, 1948 (Amendment) Order, 1950.

(2) Agricultural Wages (Minimum Rates) Order, 1951.

(3) Agricultural Wages (Minimum Rates) Order, 1953.

NOTES.

(1) The rates for 1st week of March, 1953, are for a 50 hour week. The rates for 1952, 1951 and 1950 are for a 54 hour week.

(2) From October, 1950, the "qualifying age" for the adult rate was reduced from 20 years to 19 years. Hence the rate in 1st week of March, 1950, is for workers of 20 years of age and upwards; the rate for 1951, 1952 and 1953 is for workers of 19 years of age and upwards.

(3) Up to July, 1951, the areas in columns 3 and 5 were in the same Group. From that time the area in column 3 was put into a higher Group.

(4) From the 28th April, 1952, to the 22nd February, 1953, the Agricultural Wages (Minimum Rates) Order, 1952, was in force. This Order does not affect the periods referred to in the question. The rates under this Order were as follows:—

(5) The rates quoted above are, as indicated, exclusive of board and any other benefits or advantages. At present the amount which may be deducted in respect of board or board and lodgings per day varies from 5/8 in Group I to 5/4. in Group IV There are other benefits or advantages, e.g., rent of cottage, grass of cow, the deductions in respect of which vary at present from 1/6 to 3/- per week, depending on the Group and the particular benefit or advantage.

(6) The following is the area in Group II:—

The townlands of Belmont Demesne, Kilruddery Deerpark, Paddock, Rathdown Upper, Templecarrig Lower, Templecarrig Upper, Windgate, in the District Electoral Division of Delgany; the townlands of Ballymorris, Ballynamuddagh, Ballywaltrin, Berchuillia Commons, Giltspur, Hollybrook, Irishtown, Kilbride, Killarney, Kilruddery Deerpark, Kilruddery Demesne East, Kilruddery Demesne West, Oldcourt, Springfield, Wingfield, in the District Electoral Division of Kilmacanogue.

(7) The following is the area in Group IV:—

District Electoral Divisions of Ballybeg, Kilpipe. Tinahely, Cronelea, Killinure, Rath, Money, Aghowle, Shillelagh, Coollattin, Coolboy, Carnew and Ballingate,

(8) The following is the area in Group III:—

The whole of the County, with the exception of the Urban District of Bray, which is in Group I, the 22 townlands in Group II, and the 13 electoral divisions in Group IV.
